Opening for Senior Research Fellow

The School of Chemistry are looking for a Senior Research Fellow in Micro-NMR Systems to join the team of Professor Marcel Utz, within the Magnetic Resonance research section. The position is funded through a recent major research grant to Prof. Utz by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 Future and Emerging Technologies (FETOPEN) scheme.

Magnetic Resonance is a research focus area at Southampton, with currently 7 academic staff members, and a vibrant community of postdoctoral researchers and numerous postgraduate and undergraduate students. A range of world-class NMR systems are available, including a 600 MHz cryoprobe system, various state-of-the art solid- and liquid state NMR spectrometers, EPR, dissolution-DNP, and para-hydrogen hyperpolarisation equipment. The University of Southampton is also home to the the Zepler Institute, which provides access to world-class micro- and nanofabrication facilities.

Microfluidic lab-on-a-chip devices are finding wider and wider applications in areas as diverse as the culture of cells and tissues, chemical reaction engineering, or medical diagnostics. Our aim is to bring the power of magnetic resonance spectroscopy to bear on complex microfluidic lab-on-a chip devices. In this position, you will oversee a small research team and lead a vigorous research program aimed at developing novel NMR detector systems and associated hardware, acquisition algorithms, and data processing methods for NMR observation and characterisation of chemical and biological processes on microfluidic devices in-situ.

The position is set up as a stepping stone towards an independent career for a junior researcher with a strong background in electrical engineering, experimental physics, experimental physical chemistry, or a related field. Professional experience in nuclear magnetic resonance, lab-on-a-chip systems, and/or micro-fabrication is desirable, but not a prerequisite. If you are a passionate and creative scientist with an emerging track record of original contributions in the design of advanced experimental apparatus, this position is for you.

chip-micrographsMicrofluidic lab-on-a-chip devices are increasingly used to culture living systems (cells, tissue slices, and small organisms) under highly controlled conditions. At the same time, NMR spectroscopy is ideally suited to study living matter due to its specificity, linearity, and its ability to provide detailed molecular information completely non-invasively. The aim of the current project is to bring the power of magnetic resonance spectroscopy to bear on complex microfluidic lab-on-a chip devices. In this position, you will develop novel NMR-compatible lab-on-a-chip devices, use them to culture mammalian cells, and develop NMR protocols and methods to study them. In particular, we are interested in applying novel hyperpolarisation approaches to microfluidic Lab-on-a-chip devices.
